Fortnite Creator is Buying Entire Forests to Prevent Them From Being Chopped Down

Fortnite is one of the biggest games of this decade, and it rose to prominence in a very seemingly organic way. Tim Sweeney, the game’s creator has been at work for decades in fact, developing different, intricate and interactive realms in the digital world for players.

However, now he’s making headlines for something even more interesting. In the 1990’s, he founded his video and 3-D software company Epic Games. He’s been at work longer than you might expect, with Epic Games producing such titles as Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, and one of the most popular games of this decade especially among the younger people, Fortnite.

He became a billionaire, and his transition to becoming a philanthropist does not seem fake for a billionaire, for once. He’s trying to use his resources to protect the beautiful western Carolina Mountains.

For over 10 years now, since 2008 Sweeney has used millions of dollars to support conservation projects in North Carolina, his home state, to preserve and guard its forest. Over the last decade, he’s purchased nearly 40,000 acres of land, which makes him one of the largest private land owners in North Carolina.

He has used his money to donate to a variety of conservation parcel projects, such as an expansion of 1,500 acres to Mount Mitchell State Park. In order to protect 7,000 acres of the Box Creek Wilderness, Sweeney donated $15 million for a conservation project in November 2016.

This forest can be found in the historic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and like many other untouched pieces of land, the place was targeted by a corporation that sought to carve up the land and use it to run power lines to other places. Purchasing it was the only thing that prevented it from being ruined, and Sweeney managed to help protect hundreds of endangered animal and plant species in the region.

For example a biologist named Kevin Caldwell said:
“Ecologists documented more than 130 rare and watch-list plant and wildlife species, and several new-toscience wildlife and plant species, including three moths and a new spiderwort species.”

Sweeney himself said:
“It’s one of the most diverse areas in North Carolina. It has such rare plant and wildlife species, it seemed a perfect fit with the Fish and Wildlife Service. This is a first step – there will be other places protected. The goal is to connect South Mountains State Park to Chimney Rock. This is one piece of the puzzle.”

This is how you tell the difference between fake philanthropy and real efforts: consistency and openness. A year later, the man purchased 193 acres in Alamance County for $1.973 million, from one Sizemore Brothers LLC. After securing this land, Jose Kellher, a representative of Sweeney guaranteed that the land would not be developed. Then last year, he purchased another piece of land, a 1,500 acre place known as Stone Hills that could have been developed to become a golf resort community.

The land would have been turned into two “championship” golf courses, a hotel and spa, 1,050 homes and “up to 90,000 square feet of retail, dining and office space.”

Sweeney absolutely saved the day for the preservation of this land and for little other purpose. He very clearly stated:
“I bought this land because it has a nice longleaf pine forest and was available for a reasonable price. I’ll be holding it until I find a permanent nature conservation home for it, which will take years or decades.”

Hopefully this type of great action will inspire other people with wealth and influence to do good things.

  1. I want to say again that this is a wonderful thing that Tim Sweeney is doing . I also think as well that other wealthy people in the world should get on board with this great endeavor . This will stop all the liers' out there saying the earth is heating up . I do know that some country's are over poluting there surroundings and is causing serious reactions to our planet and they're not seeming to care about it . In the long haul of the life of our planet things do need to be looked at very seriously . Carbon eliminates are choking our lifestyle and we need to get the right people to get this started so our future loved ones can have a healthy life as well . I will do my part to get the word out there and make my voice heard . I do have a voice that is heard in real time and on text alerts . If anyone has any doubts on my capabilities, just ask my friends and family . I am an honest man and I love my country and every other species on this planet minus mosquitoes and other virus carrying varmints we don't need here on planet earth . Thank you and our planet thanks you for the efforts that is starting to happen for a better life for all good living creatures .

    1. I agree with your point that this is a good thing for the environment, but do you really not believe that the earth is warming up?

"This will stop all the liers' out there saying the earth is heating up"

It just seems a bit backwards in comparison to the rest of your point.

  5. I'm baffled to see how absolutely toxic this comment section is. It astonishes Me to see a handful of people get mad enough to right a little childish hate speech to them for writing down their opinion, or even a little, harmless joke. But what else can You expect from a article that has the name "Fortnite" in it.
I feel bad for the person who made this article, and expected decent feedback from it, lmao.

  6. Is he married? Lol .. Or looking for someone to manage this gorgeous forest? .. People doing less than others will always be critical and or nasty or show envy and or jealousy... It takes a courageous man/woman to do good and stay good in a world that wants to pull good people down to their Levels.

  8. Mr Unknown, It would help your case not to blurt out your opinion as your truth. Global temperatures are calculated by meteorologists in uniform scientific ways. Please educate yourself. I left you a link to simplify your search.

  11. Happy to comment - let's see, our family life eroded, my young son became violent (had to call the cops on him 20 times) when he went ballistic because he couldn't play his games on a four inch screen (9pm at night with school the next day). .. and that went on. When we begin to see the disaster playing out on our beautiful boys, I hope this "philantropist" is thrown into prison and I'll be there with the key. He has profited off of vulnerable children with guns and violence and then tries to look like the good guy - SHAME is what should be written across his forehead and I look forward to screaming it on CBS Austin during the Grammy's next week. SHAME. You have stolen our boys from us and reduced them to their lowest interests, shooting and killing, setting them up for life. And that will be the society we'll have to live in with them. SHAME. and I do have stronger words I am getting prepared to scream. Through this man in prison.

    1. How about being a parent and setting some boundaries instead of blaming other people because you can't take a game away from your kid. Limit them to twice a week for a certain period of time. Or take it away completely for a while. Make playing their game a reward for doing chores or getting good grades. If you can't do that, you are a crap parent. And that is on you.

  13. There are a good number of philanthropists who care for fellow poor downtrodden humans but the philanthropists for trees, forests & biodiversity are on finger counts.
I desire more 'rich ' men who care for nature.
